Choosing An ATV

Also known as ATVs, quads, and four-wheelers, these machines are great for blazing trails and getting work done, which makes them an excellent choice for a variety of people. Types Of ATVs
There are two main categories of ATVs. Each type is designed for a specific style of riding and has the features and specs to match. Narrowing down your search to one type of quad can help to eliminate a lot of options.
- Utility ATVs are the most common type. The style of these four-wheelers is boxy and bulky. Designed for work purposes, you’ll find features like cargo racks and two-up seats. Although built for work projects, you can also use these for hours of trail riding.
- Sport model ATVs are the other option. These are often sleeker in style and boast a better suspension system. Designed for thrill seekers, these models are for entertainment, not work. Want to hit the trails and thrilling speeds? This is the rig for you.
The Size
Models will come in all different sizes. Compact options are better suited for navigating tight trails that may be width-restricted. Smaller models are also lighter so they boast better agility. Larger options, on the other hand, offer more power, storage space, and room for another passenger.
After ensuring the size meets your trail riding needs, you want to make sure it meets your ergonomic requirements. If it’s too big or too small for your height, you’ll be less comfortable while you ride and have a harder time controlling the vehicle. Try out a range of models and sizes to find out which one suits you.
Your Riding Level
Someone who is brand new to the world of ATVs will have different needs than an experienced rider. The more experience you do have, the more options available. If you’re a novice, you’ll have a more limited inventory. Newer riders should stick to quads with less powerful engines (somewhere in the 250 to 300 ccs range). If your engine power exceeds your skill level, you can feel out of control. New riders can also benefit from features like automatic CVT transmission, keyed ignitions, and throttle limiters.
Terrain Type
Considering it’s an all-terrain vehicle, you may think your four-wheeler is perfect for any terrain. However, a standard ATV is better suited for compact dirt terrain. If you plan on riding on looser terrain like sand or mud, you’ll want to check out more specialized models.
Transmission
ATVs come in both manual or automatic transmissions. Most manufacturers have at least one model with an automatic transmission. These are great for gentle riding. Driving up hills is also easier with an automatic transmission. On the other hand, these models don't have the engine compression you need to go down steep hills. For utility models, a manual transmission is preferred since it reduces wear and tear.
Features
Some riders are content with basic models, while others may prefer a quad with more features. There is a wide range of amenities available in these vehicles. Maybe you want to bring a friend along. In this case, you should look for an ATV with a larger seat and suspension capable of handling extra weight. If you want a more comfortable ride, check out models with fenders that keep mud and water off of your clothes.
Budget
Finally, you’ll need to create a strong budget before you start browsing. It’s too easy to get drawn to a top-of-the-line model that you can’t afford. When you stick to a strict budget, you’ll eliminate options outside of your price range. If you want something more affordable, consider getting a used four-wheeler. Don’t forget to budget in the cost of gear like a helmet too!
